Musicality in Tango - Not jsut a privilege for leaders

“He dances so off-beat.”
“He doesn’t hear the phrasing!”
“I just can’t dance with him if he’s always out of sync with the music!”

Sounds familiar?

Followers often complain about the musicality of leaders – and yes, sometimes they’re right.
But let’s be honest: many followers don’t really know what musical dancing actually means either.
Or how much they themselves can contribute to musicality – even when the leader isn’t exactly ‘listening’.

Spoiler:
Dancing on the beat isn’t enough.
And stopping when the music stops isn’t exactly a sign of great timing either.

Music is not just background noise

It’s shocking how many tango dancers treat music as nothing more than background ambiance.
Sometimes it feels like it’s only about combinations:
Another pulpo. Another back sacada. Another fancy step seen in a Facebook video.

As if followers were saying:
“Oh yes, I love dancing with him, he always does these complicated steps I don’t understand.”

You get the idea...
No one says that.

And in the end, many dancers glide right over entire musical phrases —
as if they were deaf to the structure of the music —
just to show off what they (think they) know.

Fewer steps – more music

Dear Leader:
If you think you’re impressing your follower with a thousand combinations – here’s a tough truth:
Most followers will love it much more when you dance a few simple steps –
but with feeling and musicality.

Because what’s the point of a back sacada if:

the connection is lost,

she’s afraid of being stepped on,

or actually gets hurt?

A clean side step with a musical pause is far more tango than a risky sequence that ruins the embrace.
And you’ll be surprised how much more your partner opens up when you give her space to breathe.

Follower first – but not blaming

Dear followers:
You have way more influence on the music than you might think.
Musicality is not a monologue by the leader.

If you:

  • instantly fill every silence,
  • execute everything “correctly” the moment it’s led,
  • treat pauses like mistakes,

...then you’re also killing the musical dialogue.

Instead:
→ Feel your own body and what the music stirs in it
→ Give yourself time – you don’t need to follow like a military drill
→ Play with the music, listen, embellish (check out the Adorno Special Bundle)
→ Execute what’s led with rhythm and logic – not “whenever”

But what is musicality, anyway?

Being musical in tango doesn’t mean stepping on every beat like a metronome.
It also doesn’t mean always starting a sequence at the beginning of a phrase that lasts exactly eight counts.

Musicality means interpreting the music – with whatever you choose to do.

A musical dance includes:

  • Rhythm (the steady pulse – often heard as "yum-ba")
  • Melody (the emotional voice – violin, vocals, a musical story)
  • Phrases (musical sentences – danceable like language)
  • Syncopation (off-beat tension – dance it or resist it)
  • Interludes (the cheeky piano part that suddenly flares up)
  • Pauses & Attacks (those moments of NOTHING or EVERYTHING – and you choose what happens)

If you don’t naturally “have” musicality – no stress.
You can learn it.
You can hear it, feel it, express it – in your own way.

With your body. With your style. With your personality.
And I can show you how.
